PROGRAM TIERS

Four developmental pathways built to elevate athletes from fundamentals to varsity-level competition. Each tier builds on the last.  Our programs include weekly conditioning sessions to improve on performance and injury prevention.

13U

FOUNDATION

Our entry-level program focuses on building a strong technical foundation. Athletes develop core volleyball skills including passing, setting, serving, and basic offensive and defensive systems.

DEVELOPMENT

Athletes begin position specialization while continuing to build on fundamentals. Increased competitive play prepares them for higher-level tournaments and team dynamics.

COMPETITIVE

Tournament-level training with a regional travel schedule. Athletes refine advanced techniques and develop game IQ for high-pressure match situations.

VARSITY

Advanced competitive training bridging the gap between U15 and varsity-level play. Athletes sharpen leadership on the court, refine positional mastery, and compete in a demanding regional tournament schedule.

ELITE

High school varsity-level training focused on competitive regional tournament play. Athletes develop advanced skills and team chemistry in a high-intensity environment.

PERFORMANCE TRAINING

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Strength and conditioning classes designed to improve athletic performance, build power and endurance, and help prevent injuries throughout the season. Open to all Charleston Surge athletes. Limited to two classes per week.

Luis Hernandez
HEAD COACH & CLUB DIRECTOR

Luis Hernandez

17U Elite

With over 17 years of coaching experience at both the high school and club levels, Coach Luis Hernandez brings a deep passion for developing athletes on and off the court. Throughout his career, he has guided numerous players to compete at the varsity level, with several advancing to play at four-year colleges and others continuing their journey in the sport as coaches. His commitment goes beyond wins and losses—focusing on skill development, leadership, and preparing athletes for long-term success in volleyball and in life.

NASM-certified and a four-time fitness competitor, including 2010 Ms. Atlanta SNBF champion, Lena brings elite credentials to Charleston Surge. She focuses on age-appropriate training, long-term athletic development, and injury prevention — building strength, speed, and agility in a positive environment that fuels athlete confidence and resilience.

Hannah Neuman
HEAD COACH

Hannah Neuman

14U

Originally from Wisconsin, Hannah recently moved to Charleston and is excited to join the Surge coaching staff. She holds a bachelor's in Elementary Education and a master's in Applied Behavior Analysis. Volleyball has been a big part of her life — she played throughout middle school, high school, and club as a setter and libero, and has coaching experience as a JV assistant and head coach for a 3rd–5th grade team. Hannah believes in teaching strong fundamentals while helping players develop a love for the game in a positive, encouraging environment.

Breyon Forrest
HEAD COACH

Breyon Forrest

Breyon brings a strong passion for volleyball and athlete development, backed by five years of collegiate playing experience. With one year of coaching, she focuses on creating a positive, structured environment where players build confidence, skills, and a strong work ethic. Outside of volleyball, Breyon works full-time supporting adults with disabilities and special needs, strengthening her patience, communication, and adaptability. She is dedicated to helping athletes grow both on and off the court while fostering a lasting love for the game.

Addison Fisher

15U

Addison Fisher is excited to join the coaching staff at Charleston Surge Volleyball Club. She has played volleyball for five years, including competing at the national level. Throughout her playing career, Addison gained experience as both an offensive player and later as a libero, helping her develop a strong understanding of all aspects of the game. Addison is passionate about helping athletes build confidence, improve their skills, and become the best versions of themselves both on and off the court. Her energy, leadership, and love for the game make her a great addition to the Charleston Surge family.

Lauren Pernice
HEAD COACH

Lauren Pernice

16U Varsity

A West Virginia University graduate and Physical Education teacher with Berkeley County School District, Lauren grew up in Pittsburgh and developed a passion for volleyball throughout middle and high school. She played primarily as a right-side hitter with experience as a setter, giving her a well-rounded understanding of the game. Lauren is committed to creating a positive environment where athletes build confidence, develop their skills, and learn the value of hard work and sportsmanship — both on and off the court.

Erin Riekena
HEAD COACH

Erin Riekena

15U

Erin is a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, where she earned a degree in Biology with minors in Nutritional Sciences and Biochemistry. She grew up playing volleyball in Washington State, competing at the national level with her club teams and playing for her middle and high school programs. During her seven-year playing career, she competed as a libero/defensive specialist, outside hitter, and setter, giving her a well-rounded understanding of the game. As a coach, Erin is passionate about creating a positive, supportive environment where athletes can build strong fundamentals, grow their confidence, and develop a lasting love for volleyball through hard work, teamwork, and encouragement.
